I’ve had a lot of fun this year photographing weddings in Maui, Oregon, California and Italy! As the holiday season is upon us, I wanted to share some fun holiday portrait tips with you. These fun photos tips are less about the technical aspects of photographer (lighting, composition, etc…) and more about how you engage your subject. I am often asked, “how Kyer, do you capture a portrait that is fun, spontaneous and creative?” The difference between a technically sound photograph and a great photograph is being able to convey their essence.
Know how to direct and compliment your subject
When being photographed, how do you feel when a photographer says to you, “I don’t like that.”? A good photographer has a vision about how to direct their subject, telling them how to pose or move, what is working well. A good director also knows when to ask people to simply act in a natural way, not posing for the camera.
Give them something to do and ask questions
Do you like being photographed? Your subjects will be much less conscious of the camera if they are doing something: answering questions, playing a sport, or an instrument, or simply walking and holding hands with a beloved.
Use a DSLR (or SLR), not a point and shoot
Do you like freezing with a forced smile on your face when someone is slowly taking your picture? Though they are getting a bit better, most point and shoot cameras focus slowly and the delay time between pressing the shutter and the camera clicking can be that split moment when your subject turned away or their wonderful expression changed. Children in particular are hard to photograph in their spontaneous joy with a slow point and shoot camera.
Many people don’t like having their photo taken and unless your subject is a professional model, they probably feel awkward in front of the camera. It is your job as the photographer (professional or not) to engage your subject and make them comfortable. Make the photo session fun for your subjects!
On a side note, by refereeing to this email, I am offering $50 off portraits booked before December 15th.
Here are my dates for photo sessions:
